Sweet Potato Dinner Rolls

These sweet potato dinner rolls have the best texture and have a subtle sweetness that is irresistible. The sweet potato helps make the rolls moist and full of tasty flavor!

You can also use pumpkin in place of the sweet potato puree for this recipe if desired. They will still taste amazing with that substitution. These rolls are perfect for thanksgiving or any holiday meal or even just for a nice Sunday dinner or sandwiches.

What you need to make sweet potato dinner rolls:

Makes 15 large dinner rolls

1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon dry active yeast
5 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon – optional*
4 tablespoons butter – melted
2 eggs
1 cup sweet potato – roasted or boiled and mashed
5 1/2 – 6 cups flour

For egg wash:
1 egg white
2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add warm water, yeast, and sugar and let sit for 3 minutes.
  2. Add salt, melted butter, eggs, sweet potato and stir.
  3. Add flour one cup at a time until dough isn’t too sticky but all of the dough is incorporated.
  4. Knead with a electric stand mixer for 6 minutes or until the dough is smooth and has the consistency similar to chewed bubble gum. If kneading by hand knead for 10 minutes or until consistency is reached.
  5. Place dough in bowl and cover. Then let dough rise for 1:30 hours in a warm place.
  6. Gently punch dough down and form into 15 round balls.
  7. Place in a greased pan with enough room for the dough to rise.
  8. Cut a long slit in the middle of the roll with a knife.
  9. Mix 1 egg white with 2 tablespoons water and brush over the tops of rolls.
  10. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise for 1 hour.
  11. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  12. Bake for 15 minutes.
  13. Brush tops with butter and serve.
