Onion Rings

I love onions rings! They are one indulgence that just gets me every time! I love them dipped in sauces, on burgers, sandwiches or on their own. These onion rings can be made at home in just a few minutes and won’t disappoint. I also have a post with instructions on how to air fry these and they tastes delicious too. That link is here.

Burning down my house…almost…

When I was a newlywed I nearly burned my house down making onion rings. My husband had been out of town for a few days on a school trip and I wanted to greet him with a delicious steak dinner and onion rings when he got home. I put the oil on the stove right before he walked through the door.

Never leave oil unattended.

I was so excited to see him that I left the oil unattended. Big no no! I helped him bring his bags in and suddenly the fire alarm was going off. I turned the corner and a thick cloud of black smoke hit me.

Never throw water on oil and always know where a fire extinguisher or baking soda is.

I panicked because I knew what was on fire, oil! My husband did not know what was burning so while I frantically searched for the fire extinguisher someone had so thoughtfully bought us as a wedding gift. My husband went to the kitchen and threw WATER on the burning oil! As expected the oil exploded EVERYWHERE!

Little miracle.

By some miracle and I do mean miracle in the true sense of the word, my husband did not get one drop of oil on himself and was not hurt at all. How that happened can only be described as a miracle! Because he was standing two feet away from the oil when it exploded all over my kitchen.

Burnt oil is terrible to clean up!

I spend a good week scrubbing burnt oil from every surface in my kitchen. It melted through the linoleum flooring, splattered every bit of the wall and ceiling and the cupboards were scorched above the stove. The vent fan melted down and was dangling in a long melted piece above the stove. My nose was black from the smoke and I was shaking when the neighbors came running over to see if the house was on fire and if we needed help.

Proceed with caution, be smart around oil.

So after that traumatic deep frying experience I am extremely cautious when I cook with hot oil. I even avoided deep frying for a long long time and really don’t do it very much now, though I am getting more comfortable with it. I have to have everything set up perfectly though with no distractions for children running around. These onion rings are worth the fry and effort though!
