White Sausage Country Gravy

This white country sausage gravy goes perfectly with biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground mild or country sausage
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt - more to taste
  • 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon black pepper- if you like a little spice from black pepper do 1/2 teaspoon
  • Optional - 1/4 teaspoon rubbed or ground sage
  • dash of cayenne pepper
  • 4 cups milk of choice
  • 1/2 cup cream or half and half
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, add ground sausage, butter, salt, black pepper, sage, and cayenne pepper saute until cooked through. Break sausage up into small crumbles for a less chunky gravy.
  • Add milk, cream and stir together.
  • Bring to a boil and boil for roughly 3 minutes.
  • Whisk together the cornstarch and water in a dish and whisk into your gravy.
  • Cook until gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  • Taste and add additional salt and pepper to taste or if the gravy over reduced add a little more milk to balance it out.
