Grease and dust pans with shortening or butter and flour , use either 3 - 8 or 2 - 9 inch cake tins or 1 large rectangular baking pan (around a 4 quart).
In a bowl, add sugar, butter, vanilla and eggs and mix together.
Add flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt to the butter mixture, along with the milk and whisk together until everything is well mixed.
Pour into desired baking pan and bake a large rectangular cake for 30-35 minutes, 8 inch rounds for about 30- 35 minutes and 9 inch rounds for roughly 25 minutes. When cakes are risen in the middle, check the centers with a tooth pick to see if they come out clean.
