Blueberry and Basil Mocktail

This blueberry and basil mocktail is a delicious combination of blueberry syrup, fresh basil, lemon and tonic water!

I love the combination of the blueberry syrup and fresh basil. It’s refreshing and goes together surprisingly well.

I have made this drink for a few people when they visit my house and they are always intrigued by the flavors and can never quite put their finger on what the basil is until I tell them and they go “oh yeah! That’s it!” but they know that there is something herbaceous grounding this drink.

You can find blueberry syrup at stores that carry a large drink syrup selection. I personally find mine at Ikea. You can also use blueberry juice in this recipe.

You could also make your own blueberry syrup by simmering down blueberries, sugar and water together then straining out the berries and chilling the syrup.

What you need to make this blueberry and basil mocktail:

Makes ~8 ounces

  • 4 leaves fresh basil
  • 2 tablespoons blueberry syrup
  • 2 lemon wedges – one for juicing and adding to a shaker and one for garnish
  • pinch of sugar
  • 3/4 cup tonic water – divided
  • 4 cubes of ice

Instructions

  1. In a cocktail shaker or glass, add fresh basil leaves, blueberry syrup, juice of 1 lemon wedge and the lemon rind, and a pinch of sugar.
  2. Use a muddler or the end of a spatula to mash all of the ingredient together so you get a nice blend of basil, lemon and blueberry syrup.
  3. Add 1/2 cup tonic water and place the lid on the shaker and shake well or stir together.
  4. Pour through a strainer into a cup with the ice and add additional tonic water.
  5. Garnish with remaining lemon wedge.
