A tip for making these waffles is to let the butter cool slightly before adding it to the batter, it will make the waffles a little softer and tender. You can add a few things to this batter for fun twists on the basic waffle. Here is a list of add in I think would taste amazing with the traditional batter.

Optional add-ins:

  • Orange zest – (with cranberry syrup would taste amazing!)
  • Cinnamon
  • Lemon zest
  • Pumpkin or sweet potato puree
  • Pumpkin pie spice
  • Apple sauce

What you need to make browned butter waffles:

Serves 4-6

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cup flours
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk – if making pancakes add an additional 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Heat butter in a sauce pan until it turns light brown, remove it from the stove and pour into another dish promptly, it will keep cooking and you don’t want it to burn. It can get pretty dark before it actually tastes burnt, so if you are worried then taste it.
  2. Let the mixture cool until it’s just warm, not hot.
  3. In another bowl, add flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, eggs, milk, vanilla and warm butter and stir until it’s all blended and smooth.
  4. Cook in a waffle maker and enjoy!
